Bathtub Refinishing & Reglazing in Bethesda and Rockville
A Like-New Tub in a Day, Not a Demolition
A worn, stained, or chipped tub doesn't always need to come out of the wall. Professional refinishing — also called reglazing or resurfacing — chemically etches the old surface, repairs chips and rust spots, and sprays on a new high-gloss coating that cures in 24-48 hours. It costs a fraction of bathtub replacement and avoids the tile demolition and plumbing work that come with pulling a tub. The same process renews shower pans, wall tile, and bathroom countertops.
Around here, refinishing is often the genuinely better choice — not just the cheaper one. The pre-war homes of Chevy Chase and Washington, DC and the 1950s ramblers of Bethesda and Silver Spring have original cast-iron tubs that are heavier, deeper, and quieter than most modern replacements; reglazing keeps that quality and the original tile untouched. Mid-century bathrooms with pink, mint, or blue tile can be reglazed to a modern white without retiling. And in the condo buildings of Friendship Heights and the Pike District, refinishing avoids the wet demolition many associations restrict — one day of masked, ventilated spray work instead of a week of contractors in the service elevator.

Get a Free QuoteRefinish or Replace? We Do Both, So the Advice Is Honest
Refinishing-only companies recommend refinishing; remodelers recommend remodeling. iDesign does both, plus full bathroom remodels, so our recommendation follows the condition of your fixture, not our sales sheet. A sound cast-iron tub with surface wear: refinish it. A flexing fiberglass pan, hidden leak, or a layout you hate: put the money toward a new tub or a new shower enclosure instead.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bathtub Refinishing
How long does a reglazed bathtub last?
A professionally reglazed tub lasts 10-15 years with normal care: no abrasive cleaners, no suction-cup bath mats, and prompt repair of any chips. DIY kits typically peel within a year or two, which is why most of the "fix my peeling tub" calls we get are re-dos of DIY coatings.
Should I reglaze my tub or replace it?
Reglazing costs $450-$1,200 and takes a day; replacement costs $1,500-$8,000+ and takes several days of demolition, plumbing, and tile work. If your tub is a quality cast-iron unit with a worn or stained surface, reglazing is usually the smart money. If the tub is cracked through, rusting from below, or you want a different size or a walk-in shower, replacement is the better investment.
Can you get rid of my pink or green 1950s tile?
Yes. Reglazing works on ceramic wall tile, so the pink, mint green, and baby blue bathrooms common in mid-century DMV homes can be coated to a modern white or almond without demolition. It is a popular option when the tile is structurally sound and you want a cosmetic reset for a fraction of the cost of retiling.
How soon can the tub be used, and does it smell?
The coating cures in 24-48 hours before the tub can be used. The process does produce strong fumes, so we mask the room, run exhaust ventilation, and recommend keeping the bathroom door closed and a window cracked during cure. Occupants with respiratory sensitivities may want to be out of the home the day of spraying.

What Our Clients Say

Kitchen Remodel & Custom Addition
This was our fourth project with iDesign in the past couple of years, and they impress us every time — the office responds quickly and the crews show up when promised. For our full kitchen renovation and custom addition, the showroom team explained every phase and worked in everything on our list. They even matched the paint and style of the addition to the rest of the house, something other contractors had told us was impossible.

Multi-Room Home Remodel
iDesign made our dream home happen. Coordinating separate contractors for a multi-room remodel had been a struggle, but working with one design team and their own crews took all of that stress away. Communication was excellent from start to finish across nearly 2,400 square feet of renovation — including the kitchen, which had felt overwhelming before. We are grateful to the whole team.

Full Condo Remodel
Our condo received a stunning top-to-bottom remodel: a flawless kitchen transformation, a bathtub-to-shower conversion, popcorn ceiling encapsulation, and new recessed lighting that brightens the whole space. The craftsmanship is exceptional, and the customer service made a major renovation completely stress-free.

Second-Story Addition & Rental Prep
We were on a hectic timeline preparing our house as a rental before moving out of the DMV, and we could not have navigated it without iDesign. They built a custom second-story addition, replaced the kitchen backsplash, installed a new bathroom vanity, and repainted several rooms — and they connected us with a licensed architect for the DC permits, which saved us a huge headache. Their attentiveness and input were invaluable.

Emergency Repair & Bathroom Remodel
When water started leaking through our ceiling one morning, the iDesign team and their plumber were at our house within hours and quickly traced it to a pipe under the bathroom floor. The price they offered was so good that we ended up redoing the entire bathroom. The work was wonderful, finished quickly, and barely disrupted our routine — we would call them again without hesitation.
